Activity Type: Build Fluency
Activity Form: Game
Grade: K, 1, 2
Group Size: Small Group
Length: 10 minutes
Materials: irregular word cards
Goal: Given a printed irregular word, the student can say its sound with automaticity (irregword -> "irregword").
Items: All irregular words learned so far

What to do

  1. Before beginning the activity, assign students to pairs. Try to pair students of the same level together. Each pair will need a deck of irregular word cards.
  2. Today, we are going to play a game called Speed Battle.
  3. Each pair will get a deck of cards. You will sit next to your partner with the deck of cards face-down. One person will turn over the top card.
  4. Both students will say the word on the card. The person who says it correctly first gets to keep it. You will have to read fast!
  5. If you both read it correctly at the same time, it is a battle. You will flip the next two cards over at the same time and have to read both of them. Again, the person who reads them correctly first, gets to keep them.
  6. Continue playing until all of the cards are used. The person with the most cards wins!
  7. Does anyone have any questions? Answer questions, clarifying the activity.
  8. Walk around and observe as student play the game. For students who struggle, offer help and make a note in an Activity Log.
