Activity Form: Game |
Grade: 1 |
Group Size: Whole Class |
Length: |
Materials: Irregular word cards, index cards |
Goal: Given a written irregular word, the student can say its sound with automaticity (irregword -> "irregword"). |
Items: All irregular words learned so far. |
What to do
- Use Irregular word cards to create a list of irregular words. Print one irregular word on an index card and post it by the classroom door.
- We are going to have a new secret password that you must use to get in and out of our classroom. You never know when the password is going to change, so make sure you always remember to check it out.
- The password will be posted right here. Point to the spot in the room where the irregular word is posted.
- Remember this is a secret password. That means you cannot tell children in other classes what our password is.
- If you leave the room to use the restroom or get a drink of water, you must quietly whisper our password on the way in and the way out. When we are all lined up to go to lunch or to special, each of you must quietly whisper the word as you pass through the door.
- Does anybody have any questions?
- Change the password every few days or as students become familiar with the word. Make sure to keep all words posted somewhere in the room.
- Observe students read the words. For those who struggle, give them help and make a note in an Activity Log.
