Activity Type: Build Fluency
Activity Form: Game
Grade: K, 1
Group Size: Small Group
Length: 15 minutes
Materials: A deck of 32 word cards
Goal: Given a word, the student can identify another word from the same family (“back” - > “tack”).
Items: All word family words learned so far

What to do

  1. Before introducing the game, create a deck of 32 word cards. Choose four words from eight different word families. Example words for a word family card deck can be found in the last step of these directions.
  2. Deal each player five cards and place the remaining cards face-down in a stack in the middle of the circle.
  3. How many of you have ever played the game Go Fish before? Today we are going to play a game kind of like that, but we are going to call it Go Word! To play our game, Go Word!, you must look for matches of rhyming words.
  4. Each player will get five cards. First, you must look at your cards and decide if any two rhyme. If they do, place the pair in front of you. Remember, every time you put down a pair of rhyming words, you must say the words out loud.
  5. Then, when it is your turn, ask another player for rhyming cards. For example, if you have the cat card, you would say, “Suzy, do you have a word that rhymes with cat?” Suzy must give you a card that rhymes with cat. If she doesn’t have any cards that rhyme with cat, then she tells you to “Go Word!” Then you must take the top card from the stack in the middle. Your turn is then over, and the person sitting next to you gets a turn.
  6. Don’t forget, every time you put down a pair of rhyming words you must say the words out loud. Does anybody have any questions? Answer any questions students may have about how to play the game. Then allow them to play in small groups.
  7. Observe small groups of students play the game. For students who struggle, give them help and make a note in an Activity Log. Below are suggestions for the word family card deck.
     that, bat, cat, sat
     back, tack, sack, shack
     fell, shell, bell, sell
