Identifying and Generating Rhyming Words, Make a Big Book of Rhymes

Materials: Picture cards, (print them here), blank paper, crayons, glue, markers, chart paper
Goal: Given a spoken word, the student can say another word that rhymes with it.
Items: 1 syllable words

What to do

  1. Before beginning the activity prepare the book. Staple together 7 or 8 sheets of chart paper. Leave the first sheet blank as a cover students can decorate at the end. On the other pages, glue one picture card to the top of each page. Write the name of the picture next to it, and draw a line underneath it.
  2. Introduce the activity. Today we are going to be authors and make our very own book. This is going to be a big book of rhymes. Raise your hand if you are good at making rhymes.
  3. Show students the first page of the book. Can anyone tell me what this is a picture of? Call on a student. Good, this is a picture of a _____. Now, can anyone think of something that rhymes with _____? Start making a list on the board as students give you words that rhyme with the picture.
  4. Now everyone is going to get a piece of blank paper. Your job is to choose one of the rhyming words and draw a picture of it. Underneath your picture, you need to write the name of the picture. Give students time to work.
  5. Now you need to cut out your picture, with it’s name. When I see that you have done that, I will call you to come up and glue your picture on to our page.
  6. Once all the students have had a chance to glue their pictures, explain that you will continue to write this book the next day. Continue for 6 or 7 days, until you have filled out all of the pages of the book. On the last day, allow students to come up with a title for the book and decorate the front cover. They may want to write their names on the cover as the authors of the book.
  7. If students are able to make rhymes, for the last few pages of the book do not put a list of rhyming words on the board. Instead, allow students to come up with the rhymes on their own, and provide help as necessary.
  8. Observe students participate in the activity. For students who struggle, give them help and make a note in an Activity Log.
