Segmenting Syllables, Treasure Box Game

Length: 15 minutes

Materials: Picture cards, (print them here), 1 box or bag

Goal: Given a picture, the student can say the word and clap once for each syllable

Items: 1,2, and 3 syllable words

What to do

Before introducing the game, print pictures of 1, 2, and 3 syllable words. Attach pictures to index cards and laminate if possible. Mix cards up, and place them inside a sturdy box or bag.
Now, you are going to play a game. Each person is going to choose a treasure from the treasure bag. Once you have chosen your treasure, you must tell us what it is. However, instead of screaming your treasure out, tell it to us in syllables.
Demonstrate how to play. Watch what I do. Pull a card out of the bag. Do not show the card to the class, and clap the syllables. “Pen” (clap), “cil” (clap). Show the card. Am I right? Give me a thumbs up or thumbs down?
Would anyone else like to try? Call on a volunteer to come pick a word from the treasure box. Have the volunteer say their word while clapping out the syllables. Is she right? Thumbs up or thumbs down?
Continue asking students to pick cards and clap out the syllables until everyone in the class has had a turn. Each time, call on a student individually to give a thumbs up or thumbs down.
Observe students play the game. For students who struggle, give them help and make a note in an Activity Log.
