Segmenting Syllables, Word Split Stomp

Length: 5 minutes

Goal: Given a two-syllable spoken word, the student can stomp once for each syllable in the word ( "pencil" -> "pen" (stomp), "cil" (stomp) ).

Items: List of two-syllable words

What to do

Before the activity begins, generate a list of about 30 two-syllable words.
Today we are going to practice breaking words apart and putting them back together. Before we begin this activity, can everyone please stand up straight with your feet together? When I say a word, it will be your job to break that word into two syllables. For example, if I say the word “keyboard,” you must say “key-board”. (Stomp your left foot while saying “key” and your right foot while saying “board.” After you stomp both feet, your feet should be about a foot apart.) Afterwards, I will ask you to put the two syllables back together, so that you can say the word quickly. "Keyboard". (Jump up and pull your feet together so that they land on the ground together.)
Let’s practice. The first word is, "bathroom". The students should respond, “bath-room” (while stomping). Great. Now, put the syllables back together. The student should respond, “bathroom” (while jumping so that both feet land together).
This activity can also be done using longer words and alternative body motions.
