Activity Type: Build Accuracy
Activity Form: Game
Grade: K
Group Size: Small Group
Length: 15 minutes
Materials: Playing card size letter cards
Goal: Given printed letter and picture cards, the student can match them according to the sounds they represent.
Items: Letter sounds

What to do

  1. Print out the letter cards and picture cards you would like to use. Make sure that each letter has one matching picture and that there are enough sets of cards for your class.
  2. Have your students sit in circles of three or four. Distribute the sets of cards to the groups and have them place all the cards face-down.
  3. Play proceeds as in a conventional memory game; matches are not made between identical cards but between letters and pictures. When a student has a match, he or she should identify the sound linking the cards. A successful match means the student can take another turn.
  4. The game is over when all the cards have been matched. If you notice any students having difficulty, you may wish to make observations in an Activity Log.
