Identifying Sounds in Words with Elkonin Boxes

| Materials: Elkonin boxes (one per student; to learn more about Elkonin boxes, click here), chips or markers for the Elkonin boxes (four per student), ten picture cards |
| Goal: Given a picture of a word, the student can identify the picture with the correct word and recognize the word's initial, medial, and final sounds. |

What to do
- Select the picture cards for the words you would like to use in this activity.
- Hand out an Elkonin box to each student.
- Show your students a picture card and ask them to identify it and say the initial, medial, or final sound for the corresponding word. What is this? Bear, good. What is the final sound in the word bear? Good, /r/!
- In the example above, each student would place a chip in the final square of his or her Elkonin box after the class identifies /r/. Repeat steps three and four for every picture card.
- Give students who struggle help. You may wish to make a note of their problems in an Activity Log.
