Beginning Sounds: Poem

Grade: K, 1, 2

Length: 15 minutes

Materials: Playing card size letter cards, Poem written on chart paper or a dry erase board, dry erase marker

Goal: Given a poem (orally), the student will be able to identify the words in the poem that begin with a particular sound/letter.

Items: Teacher chooses the targeted sound students are working on

What to do

Teacher reviews the letter and sound of the letter the class is working on. Write the letter on the board and have students repeat the letter and sound with you.
Place a poem written on chart paper in front of students. Make sure to select a poem that contains several words that begin with the designated sound. Read the poem to students, remembering to point to the words while reading.
Reread the poem sentence by sentence. After reading each sentence, ask students what words begin with the targeted sound. Ask them what letter makes the sound and have them circle words that begin with the targeted sound.
At the end of the activity, say words circled, emphasizing the beginning sound. You may wish to add these words to your class word wall.
