Activity Type: Build Fluency |
Activity Form: Game |
Grade: K, 1 |
Group Size: Small Group |
Length: 15 minutes |
Materials: A blank die or small cube, 1 fine point permanent marker, 1 Image:Take A Roll Scorecard.doc for each player |
Goal: Given a word ending, the student can identify a word from the same family (“ack” - > “back”). |
Items: All word family words learned so far |
What to do
- Before introducing the game, use a fine point permanent marker to write four different word endings on each side of a blank die or cube. For example, write "an", "ap", "ag", and "at" on 4 different sides. On the remaining two sides, write “lose a turn” and “roll again.”
- Pass out Take a Roll Scorecards to all students participating in the game.
- Today we are going to play a game and practice all the word families we have been learning. When it is your turn, you must roll the die. Then you must think of a word that goes with the word family you landed on.
- For example, if I rolled and the die landed on “an,” what word can I say? Call on a student with his hand raised. Very good. I could say the word “man.”
- Once you have said you word, you need to write the word on your list (Take a Roll Scorecard). Remember, you can only give a word one time. If you say a word twice, you lose a turn and you must pass the die to the next person.
- What do you think happens if you land on “roll again?” Call on a student with this hand raised. Very good. You can take another turn. What do you think happens if you land on "lose a turn?" Call on a student with his hand raised. Very good. Your turn is skipped and you must pass the die on to the next person.
- When time is up, the player with the most words on his list is the winner!
- Observe small groups of students play the game. For students who struggle, give them help and make a note in an Activity Log.
