Activity Type: Build Accuracy
Activity Form: Game
Grade: K, 1
Group Size: Whole Class
Length: 15 minutes
Materials: Index cards, Bucket
Goal: Given a printed regular word, students can sound out the word and then say the word (abc -> “aaabbbccc” -> "abc").
Items: All letter sounds learned so far

What to do

  1. Before introducing the game, create a list of CVC words (or any other word pattern you want students to practice). Copy words onto index cards. If possible, laminate cards.
  2. Today we are going to play a game called Around the World. Two people will stand up and I will show them a card with a word printed on it. The first person to sound out the word correctly is the winner.
  3. Watch how I sound it out. Caaat….cat! Thumbs up or thumbs down? Good. I read the word correctly, so I move on to the next person.
  4. Demonstrate how to play. Ask two children who sit next to each other to stand up. Count to three, and then show them a word card. Good, ___ is the winner. The person who sounds out the word on the card correctly moves on to the next person. The other person must sit down.
  5. Continue around the room until everyone has had a chance to read a card. When a student loses, the student takes the seat of the winner.
  6. The student who makes it the furthest around the room wins the whole game.
  7. Observe students play the game. For students who struggle, give them help and make a note in an Activity Log.
