What to do

  1. Today we are going to go over some trick words. These words have letters that you never hear when you say them. The first word is lamb. What letters do you hear in lamb?
  2. Work with your students to derive the three letter sounds of lamb, /l/, /a/, and /m/. Write these letters on the board. Good. These are the letter sounds in lamb. But guess what? You don't spell lamb l-a-m. You spell it with a silent b at the end. Write the word lamb on the board. Some words have silent letters. These are letters you see but don't say. Erase the silent letter in your mind before you say the word.
  3. Now we're going to go over some other words with silent letters. The only way to know how to spell these words is to get used to their tricks.
  4. Introduce three or four more words with silent letters. Review the day's trick words at the end of the lesson to reinforce what your students have learned.
