Activity Type: Introduce
Activity Form: Standard
Grade: K, 1 (can be adapted for older students)
Group Size: Small Group
Length: 5-8 minutes
Materials: A Fun Day
Goal: The student can develop the skill of following text from one line to the next or "return sweep".
Items: A Fun Day

What to do

  1. Display the book A Fun Day. Who remembers which way we read the words in the book? Call on a student to come up and model by pointing to each word in the title of the book, moving from left to right. Today we are going to talk about what we do when we read a page in a book that has two lines of writing.
  2. Turn to page 5 in the book A Fun Day. On page 5 you will see that there is two lines of text. Read the first line text and then stop and the end of the first line. I have reached the end of the first line. I don’t turn the page! I need to read the rest of the words on the page. I move my finger to the next line of text starting on the far left side. Model for students the return sweep, where your finger moves from the end of the first line to the start of the next line. Read the next line of the page.
  3. Let’s try this again. We will read the words on this page together. Put your finger under the first word on the page and track while you and the students read the words on the first line. Stop when you get to the end of the first line. We have come to the end of the first line. What do we do now? Call on a student to come up and model with the return sweep. Read the next line of the text together.
  4. If there is time, go back to the start of the book and do a choral reading.
