What to do

  1. Review meanings of prefixes en-, em-, fore-, de-, auto-, after-, con-, and mid-. Ask students to define words using the prefixes.
  2. Show examples of prefix and root word cards and how to combine them to form words. Also model a nonsense word, like "dehappy." Ask if it is a word.
  3. Explain rules of concentration game. Lay cards face down. On your turn, turn over two cards. If the two cards make a word, you have a match. Say the word, explain what it means. If you don't know, others can help you. Keep both cards. If you don't have a match, turn cards back over face down.
  4. Keep taking turns until all cards are matched.
  5. When you're done, record the words you created on the recording sheet. Write the word, the definition, and draw a picture illustrating the word.
