Onsets and rimes
From FreeReading
- The onset is the initial part of a syllable, up to but not including the first vowel. For example, gr is the onset in grate.
- The rime is the part of a syllable after the onset. For example, ate is the rime in grate.
Teaching students to identify and manipulate onsets and rimes is often part of a course in phonological awareness, preceding work with phonemes.
