Materials: magnetic letters |
Goal: Given a "word family" word made out of magnetic letters, the student will identify the onset and rime, then separate and reform the word. |
Items: Word Family words such as words ending in -at, -ind, -ing, -est, -air, -en, -it, -eed, -ock, -ug, -up, etc. |
What to do
- Students will build a word family word, such as "cat," with magnetic letters.
- After reading the word, the student will identify the onset and rime.
- The student will place one hand on the onset and one hand on the rime. Then he or she will slide the word apart and put it back together while saying the word.
- The student will then create new words that belong to the same word family and repeat the activity.
