What to do
- Before beginning the game line groups of four or five students up in a single file line. The first person in line should be directly in front of the chalkboard with a piece of chalk in his hand.
- I am going to start at the end of the line. I am going to use my finger to draw a letter on the last person’s back. Pay close attention when I do this. Then that person must draw the same letter on the person’s back in front of them. Then that person must draw the same letter on the person’s back in front of them.
- You will keep going like this until it gets to the front the person. That person must use the chalk to draw the letter on the board. Then we will see if it is correct.
- When students finish, determine together if the letter is correct or incorrect. If it is incorrect, give other students in line a chance to write what they think it was on the board.
- Repeat the game, and give students a chance to rotate spots in line.
- For a variation on this activity, line up several groups of students all at the same time and have them race.
- Observe small groups of students play the game. For the students who struggle, give them help and make a note in an Activity Log.
