Activity Type: Build Accuracy
Activity Form: Game
Grade: K
Group Size: Small Group
Length: 10 minutes
Materials: Picture cards, 1 large poster board, 1 permanent marker, 1 bean bag
Goal: Given a sound, the student can identify words with that begin with that sound (/d/ -> "dog").
Items: All letters learned so far.

What to do

  1. Before introducing the game, prepare the poster board. Use the permanent marker to divide the board into a 4 x 4 grid (4 boxes going down, and 4 boxes going across). Print 16 Picture cards, each with a different beginning sound. Glue one picture into each of the 16 boxes on the poster board.
  2. Lay the poster board on the ground, and stand about a foot in front of it.
  3. Today we are going to do a bean bag toss. When it is your turn, you must stand in front of the board and toss the bean bag onto the board. Watch how I do it. Demonstrate gently tossing the bean bag onto the poster board.
  4. Now, I am going to look at where my bean bag landed? It landed on the picture of a dog. “Dog.” Now I must tell the people in my group what sound dog begins with. I think dog begins with the sound “/d/”. And I know that the “/d/” sound is the letter “d.”
  5. After your toss your bean bag, you must tell your group the first sound of the picture, and what letter makes that sound.
  6. Did I throw the bean bag across the room? No. Did I aim at another person? No. I tossed the bean bag very gently and I aimed at the board. That is how you must throw the bag when it is your turn.
  7. Who wants to try? Call on a student to come to the front and demonstrate.
  8. Allow students to play in a small group.
  9. Observe students. For students who struggle, give them help and make a note in an Activity Log.
