From FreeReading

Jump to: navigation, search
Activity Type: Build Accuracy
Activity Form: Standard
Grade: K, 1
Group Size: Small Group
Length: 15 minutes
Materials: bean bag or ball
Goal: Given a sound, the student can produce words with that begin with that sound (“/d/” -> “dog”).
Items: All letter sounds learned so far.

What to do

  1. Have students sit in a circle.
  2. Today we are going to pass the bean bag around the circle. As soon as the first person gets the bean bag, I am going to say a letter. That person must then pass the bean bag around the circle and name five words that begin with the letter I called out.
  3. Remember, you have to name five words before the bean bag gets back to you. If you can’t name five words in that time, you’ll be out.
  4. Does anybody have any questions before we play? Answer students’ questions and then begin the game. Be sure to say a letter sound, not a letter name.
  5. If the naming five words proves too difficult, try three. For students who struggle, give them help and make a note in an Activity Log.
