Letter Ole-Maid

Activity Type: Build Accuracy
Activity Form: Game
Grade: K
Group Size: Pair
Length: 3 minutes
Materials: Individual student letter cards, Playing card size letter cards
Goal: Given printed letters, the student can discriminate between capital and lower case letters.
Items: letters from A-Z.

What to do

  1. Teacher says: This is a capital (A) and this is a lower case (a).

2. Teacher says: this is a capital (B) and this is the lower case (b).

3. Teacher says: this is a capital (C), can you find the lower case (c)?

4. Teacher says: great job! Now place the card in front of the students then ask the students to take turns locating the capital letter that matches the lower case letter.

5. Teacher says: outstanding! repeat until students have mastered all letters.

(In the beginning the teacher should use 3-6 letters, keep in mind it is not uncommon for students to initially struggle with this activity).

After realizing my students were unable to identify capital and lower letters, I experimented with numerous activities and found this one to be the most effective.
