What to Do

Prepare

1. Explain the lesson.

Today we will be talking about fairy tales. Fairy tales are stories that are make-believe. Fairy tales are set in the past and begin with phrases such as “Once upon a time” and “Long, long ago.” Fairy tales consist of evil characters and good characters. There is a problem, a solution, and usually a happy ending.

2. Read aloud a fairy tale to the class.

Model/Instruct

3. After reading the fairy tale, have the students identify the setting, characters, problem, and solution. Record their answers on the board or chart paper.

Did the fairy tale begin with a special phrase? Where and when did the story take place? Who were the main characters? Which ones were evil and which were good? What was the problem? How was the problem solved? Was there a happy ending?

4. Encourage students to list some of their favorite fairy tales in a journal or notebook. You may want to ask them to bring in fairy tales to share with the class.

Adjust

For Advanced Students:

Encourage these students to provide reasons why we can call some characters evil and some good.

For Struggling Students:

These students may need help finding the story elements. In this case reread details from the story that identify them.

For ELL Students:

Encourage these students to share fairy tales from their own cultures.
