What to do
- Display a copy of A Fun Day for the class to see. Today, when we look at the book A Fun Day, we are going to be looking closely at the first words in the sentences. We will be talking about what the first word is and that we need to capitalize the first letter in the first word of the sentence.
- Let’s look at page 1 in our story. Point to the first word of the sentence on page 1. What is the first word in the sentence? (My) The first word in every sentence always starts with a capital letter. The word My starts with a capital M since it is the first word in the sentence. Point to the capital M at the start of the sentence.
- On page 2, what is the first word in the sentence? (This) Point to the first word in the sentence. Since “This” is the first word in the sentence, it starts with a capital T.
- Write the following sentence on the board, but do not capitalize the first word: we have a big dog. Let’s look at the sentence that I have written on the board. What is the first word that is in this sentence? (We) What is missing in this sentence? (A capital letter at the start of the sentence) The capital letter is missing at the start of the sentence. It should look like this. Erase the lowercase w and replace with the uppercase W. Every sentence needs to start with a capital letter.
