What to Do
Prepare
Make a copy of the Simple Directions Organizer for each student. Post sample simple directions for the students to use as a guide.
Model/Instruct
1. Explain the lesson.
Today you will write simple directions from our classroom to a place in the school using a worksheet. You won’t be able to leave the room so you need to be able to visualize the directions to the place in your head. Be sure to include direction words and familiar landmarks.
2. Distribute and explain the Simple Directions Organizer.
You will use this worksheet to write your directions. First you will write the name of the place to which you are giving directions. Then you will write up to five directions to explain how to get there from our classroom.
Practice
3. Students complete the Simple Directions Organizer, referring to the sample directions on the board or chart paper as needed.
Adjust
For Advanced Students:
Encourage these students to create a map in addition to the written directions.
For Struggling Students:
Allow these students to dictate their directions to the teacher.
For ELL Students:
Allow these students to draw and label a map instead of providing written directions.
