Group Size:
Length: 20 minutes
Goal: Given a story planner worksheet, students will write a Realistic Fiction story.

Materials: Board or chart paper, Story Planner (print here)

What to Do

Prepare

Make a copy of the Story Planner for each student.

Model/Instruct

1. Explain the lesson.

Today you will write your own Realistic Fiction story using this Story Planner to help organize your thoughts.

2. Ask the students to think of a name and some characteristics for their character.

3. Explain how the Story Planner will be used.

You will use the three boxes with lines to write your story. In the first box you will write the beginning of your story. The second box will explain the problem. The last box will explain the solution. Then you will make drawings of your character and add dialogue in the boxes above.

Practice

4. Students complete Story Planner.

5. When students have finished ask them to fold their planners so that only the drawings and the speech bubble are visible. Students use the drawings and the dialogue to guess what the problem and the solution are in their partner’s story.

Adjust

For Advanced Students:

Encourage these students to come up with a creative title for their story.

For Struggling Students:

These students may have trouble writing their story. In this case allow them to dictate.

For ELL Students:

Encourage these students to draw the pictures and write the dialogue before writing their story.
