What to Do

Prepare

Print copies of the Prediction Chart for each student

Model/Instruct

1. Explain the lesson.

Today we will apply what we have learned about making predictions to a book. You will choose a leveled reader and complete a Prediction Chart while you read.

2. Teach students how to complete the Prediction Chart.

In the first section of the Prediction Chart you will write your prediction of what will happen in the story. Then you will fill out the second section and circle the clues that helped you to make your prediction. In the last section you will write what really happened in the story.

Practice

3. Students read the book and complete the Prediction Chart.

4. Make sure that your students have chosen appropriate leveled books.

5. Make sure that students use reading strategies and clues consistently as they make their predictions.

Adjust

For Advanced Students:

Ask these students to explain in detail why they used the clues that they did on their Prediction Charts.

For Struggling Students:

Choose the same leveled reader for all students and have them read it as a group.

For ELL Students:

Ask students to draw their predictions or explain details that they find in the text to a partner.
