Length: 20 minutes

Materials: Board or chart paper, How-To Organizer (print here)

What to Do

Prepare

Display the large version of the sample How-To Organizer (see Reintroduce: How-To Text) on the board or chart paper. Make copies of the How-To Organizer for each student.

Model/Instruct

1. Explain the lesson.

Today you will write a draft for a how-to text using a worksheet.

2. Distribute and explain the How-To Organizer copies.

First you will choose a topic and make a list of materials. (You can ask students to refer to the list of topics that they generated with their partners; see Reintroduce: How-To Text.)

Next you will write the steps. Remember to use sequence words. Be sure to add some detail words to make the steps clear.

Practice

3. Students complete the How-To Organizer referring to the group how-to text on the board or chart paper as needed.

Now you will complete your worksheets. You can use the how-to text that we wrote together as a guide.

Adjust

For Advanced Students:

Encourage these students to create a pamphlet or small book with illustrations to support the text.

For Struggling Students:

These students may have difficulty coming up with detail words. Try brainstorming words in a small group.

For ELL Students:

Provide these students with explicit instruction about adverbs, providing examples and explaining their function in a sentence.
