What to Do
Prepare
Make a copy of the Fiction Book Review Organizer for each student. You may wish to display a completed large version of the Fiction Book Review Organizer (see Reintroduce: Fiction Book Review).
Model/Instruct
1. Explain the lesson.
Today you will choose a leveled reader and then write a book review independently.
2. Explain the organizer.
When you have finished reading you will use this worksheet to help write your book review. First you will write the title and the author’s name. Next you will record the characters and setting. Then you will provide some interesting details from the story. Last you will add your opinion by coloring in a face and give some reasons for your opinion.
Practice
3. Have your students read the book and complete the Fiction Book Review Organizer.
4. If time permits, allow your students to illustrate the cover of their books on the back of the organizer.
Adjust
For Advanced Students:
In addition to having them color the face on the organizer to indicate their opinions of the book, ask these students to write a sentence that expresses their opinion of the book and the reasons for it.
For Struggling Students:
Allow these students to use some drawings to supplement their answers.
For ELL Students:
Provide the meanings of any key vocabulary or concepts that these students may need in order to understand their leveled readers. If necessary, work with them in a small group on one leveled reader.
