What to Do

Prepare

Print a copy of the 3-Webbed Word Map for each student in the class. Create a large version of the 3-Webbed Word Map on chart paper to model the activity. Use the chart paper or the board to display vocabulary words with their meanings.

Model/Instruct

1. Review the vocabulary words you wish to cover with the class.

2. Model how to use the graphic organizer. Involve your students as you explain, filling out the 3-Webbed Word Map as they respond to your questions.

Today, we will learn more about our new vocabulary words by completing a word map.

Who can tell me one of the new vocabulary words we learned? Who can tell us something about this word?

We need three things for each word. It can be a word or a picture. It could be the meaning of the word. It could be another word that means the same thing, a synonym. It could be a drawing of the word or any other thing you think of that has to do with the word.

Call on students to share their ideas.

Practice

3. Have the students complete the 3-Webbed Word Map. Students can complete graphic organizers for the same words or be assigned different words to work on in pairs or groups.

Now it’s your turn to complete a 3-Webbed Word Map for three vocabulary words. Remember to complete each part of the word map.

4. Walk around to monitor the students’ performance. As a wrap-up, have volunteers share their work.

Adjust

After they have finished, ask these students to write a definition for each word on the back of the page.
