Length: 10 minutes
Materials: Letter cards, bucket
Goal: Given a sound, the student can identify words with that begin with that sound (/d/ -> "dog")
Items: All letter sounds learned so far.

What to do

  1. Before beginning the activity, print Letter Cards and glue them to sturdy index cards. Place all index cards in a bucket.
  2. Today we are going to play a fun game, sort of like Ring Around the Rosie. Let’s all stand in a circle. Good.
  3. Now, I need one person to stand in the middle. Choose one child to stand in the center of the circle. Pick one card from the basket and show it to everyone in the circle.
  4. Good. Now we are going to sing a little song. Let’s hold hands and go around in a circle as we sing. The first time, I want you to repeat after me so you can learn the words.
  5. Repeat the song after me. “Ring around the letter.” Have children repeat. “Ring around the letter.” Have children repeat. “What sound does it make?” Have children repeat. “What sound does it make?” Have children repeat. “/S S S S S/” Have children repeat.
  6. Excellent job! After we sing the song, I need the person in the middle to spin around until I stay stop. Make sure you have your eyes closed. When I stay stop, point your finger, and open your eyes. Ready? Go!
  7. Stop! Okay, the person you are pointing to must give us a word that starts with the sound /s/.
